(Waynesburg, Pa.) May 4, 2015 – Officials from Southwest Regional Medical Center (SRMC) announced today that current owner RegionalCare Hospital Partners has entered into an agreement with Washington Health System (WHS) for Southwest Regional Medical Center to become a part of Washington Health System. It is anticipated this transaction will be completed on July 1, 2015.

According to Southwest Regional Medical Center CEO Cindy Cowie, “We live in a rapidly changing healthcare environment and new regionally focused alignments like this are becoming imperative to the delivery of care in local communities. Over the last several months, the leaders of all three involved parties determined that the best way to ensure a strong future for the delivery of healthcare in Greene County would be for Southwest Regional Medical Center to align with another local health system. We believe this new partnership with Washington Health System will allow for continued access to care for Greene County residents. We are excited about the many possibilities.”

Gary B. Weinstein, President and CEO of Washington Health System said, “Southwest Regional Medical Center and Washington Health System have historically been the leading providers of health services to Greene County residents. The proposed transaction will enable the physicians and other health professionals at both organizations to coordinate care for these residents more effectively and efficiently.”

Mr. Weinstein added, “With this proposed transaction, Greene County residents have greater assurance that health services will continue to be provided in the county by a local entity, Washington Health System, whose mission has always included patient care to area residents.”

As part of the proposed transaction, Washington Health System intends to continue providing those services currently available at Southwest Regional Medical Center and for current employees (subject to standard review)  to continue providing those services to the community. Existing union contracts will be honored.

Sheila Stewart, chairman of the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation, said “Our board is committed to providing access to quality healthcare. This exciting new collaboration will further strengthen the footprint for healthcare here in Greene County.”

Some key benefits from the proposed agreement include:

-              Greater alignment and connectivity between physicians and physician groups at Washington Health System and Southwest Regional Medical Center resulting in better coordinated care for residents of Greene County.

-              Quality care initiatives developed by Washington Health System and the Washington Physician Hospital Organization will be available to Southwest Regional Medical Center and local physician practices.

Jay Hammers, chair of the Southwest Regional Medical Center Board, said, “By becoming part of a regional system, patients from Greene County will have both a strong local hospital and more convenient access to a broader range of services and healthcare providers.”

Between now and July 1, representatives of the three organizations will be finalizing all standard “due diligence” and completing documents related to the closing of the transaction. Southwest Regional Medical Center has been part of RegionalCare Hospital Partners (previously Essent Healthcare) since the fall of 2005.
